Plot-Based Events

Dramatic Interp, Humorous Interp, Duo Interp, and Interp in a Box are plot-based events. What exactly does that mean?

  • A plot is the story arc within a narrative that takes the listener on a journey with the characters.

  • A plot contains an introduction, a conflict or a problem that needs solving, and a resolution.

Examples of plot-based literature:

  • Novels

  • Short stories

  • Plays

  • Narrative or epic poetry

Examples of non-plot-based literature (lacking a conflict, climax, or resolution):

  • Monologues

  • Comedic or dramatic commentary, vignettes, or essays (e.g., Dave Berry, some children’s books).

  • Informative texts (e.g., encyclopedias and other reference texts, cookbooks, guidebooks, self-help)

Remember, a good interp is more than an emotional response from the audience. Interps should come from quality literature with solid plot lines that develop characters and emphasize literary themes. Speech coaches and the Speech Committee are available for clarification.
